Balloonhead Gets Lucky, ©Ed Gendron 2022 (edition of 50)
An archival print / original artwork by Ed Gendron
This is a limited edition (of 50 total) by Ed Gendron. When they're gone - they're just gone.
This picture is part of an yet-unnamed series. I loved the idea of finding a box of vintage photos from some other reality or universe. I began this series in oil painting. But it has expanded to digital photography and found images as well.
This photo used to simply be a man proudly standing on a porch. I've dramatically reworked and hand colored it.
The artwork has evolved in to a flirtatious interaction between "Balloonhead" and the surrounding sensuous warm fleshy eyes. As you can tell, He's "caught the eye" of some of them. The lavender "stairs" seem to be bored with the whole interaction. Perhaps it happens far too often to be notable.
If you like this series, then check out some of my other "Pop Surrealist" photos/paintings in this series. As the Talking Heads advised us "Stop Making Sense".
I'm offering two different sizes, choose Small or medium size.

Heliophobia, or Fear of Sunshine, ©Ed Gendron 2022 (edition of 50)
An archival print / original artwork by Ed Gendron
This is a limited edition (of 50 total) by Ed Gendron. When they're gone - they're just gone.
(watermark is for display purposes only)
When I began this series, I was very interested in surrealism as well as making something purposefully irreverent. A lot of art, (including some of mine) has lofty concepts - but this series really just revels in the absurd. Sometimes it's pretty, sometimes it's grotesque. Sometimes I worked with a lot of "platitudes" or tropes. I began this series in oil painting. But it's expanded to digital photography and found images as well.
I discovered this vintage B/W photo while working on a documentary about World War II reenactors*.
This appears to be a tear gas drill as opposed to deadly gas**. Though it makes me think of the deadly gas that the nazis used. And in the back of my mind, I created a scenario that reversed the whole meaning of this photo.
I thought...
"What is it that they are afraid of?"
"What would they need a mask to protect themselves from?"
And then I thought "Well, they represent evil, so it must be something good"
And then I thought "Sunshine!, Who doesn't like sunshine?" Well, this image is loosely based around the old quote "Sunshine is the Best Disinfectant". Sunshine, literally is a good disinfectant for microbes. In this case, the quote means that evil breeds in secrecy. It's best to drag it out into the light for all to see. And that's best even if it's unpleasant or difficult to look at. Evil cannot flourish there.
In the photo, the foreboding, evil figures are attempting to evade the sunshine. They've put on their gas masks for protection. Meanwhile, the valentines candy steadily spews warm, healthy, sunshine and they can't hide forever.

This was another found, vintage, B/W photo. I think it probably originated as a "wet-plate collodion". I think so, because of the irregularities in it. The large dark area (bottom rt) and the strange "drippy" irregularity (bottom left). I hand colored it, painted on it, and generally altered and imbued it, with new meaning.
Five women are relaxing in the shallow end of a body of water. They all seem very happy, jovial, and are silently ignoring the elephant in the room. I mean of course, the strange rainbow-esque object rising from the water behind them. The painted rainbow isn't a static arch, instead it rises from the water, twists back into itself and finally disappears behind itself. The rainbow is colorfully optimistic, and contrasts starkly with the large swath of darkness in the bottom right of frame. The sky in the distant background is anything but normal. Large, bold, deep -blue bands cross the sky diagonally. They imply distant, heavy and foreboding, rain-storms. In spite of that, the women in the foreground appear confident, relaxed, and unconcerned. Is the rainbow their creation? Is the rainbow offering them shelter from the murky water? Either way, perhaps there's hope in this scene in the face of great darkness.

This is Me, ©Ed Gendron 2022 (edition of 50)

This picture is part of an yet-unnamed series. I loved the idea of finding a box of vintage photos from some other reality or universe. I began this series in oil painting. But it has expanded to digital photography and found images as well.
This photo was probably sent from a soldier to a proposed sweetheart or pen pal. He even included the handwritten "This is Me" athe the top. But of course, I've dramatically reworked and hand colored this photo into something with new meaning. Though I made no attempt to fix the photo border. The finished artwork retains all the damage that it sustained throughout the years.
This artwork is dominated by the handwritten "This is Me" in the the top border. However, due to some kind of digital glitch, we, the viewers, aren't able to even determine "what" the person in the photo is...much less "who".
Some unmistakable glitch in this reality has occurred and now we all must try to adapt to the "new normal". Meanwhile, the person in the photograph seems yet unaware that this has happened and sits patiently for us to react.

Dark Matter is fascinating to me. It's still a great mystery of the universe that we know very little about. It gets its name, "dark", because we can't see it or observe it well. Really we can only observe some of the effects it has... kind of like the "invisible man" picking up an object and moving it around the room. Scientists believe that it's actually 85% of the matter in the universe. What if 85% of people were invisible? Think of the great effect they would have on ...well, everything. And think how constantly confused we would be, trying to understand the world around us.
I'm no scientist, but I like to romanticize it in the way that Gordon Sumner did, when he wrote the song "the Invisible Sun"
"There has to be an invisible sun
It gives its heat to everyone
There has to be an invisible sun
That gives us hope when the whole day's done"

The Unbearable Lightness of a Studio Portrait, ©Ed Gendron 2022 (edition of 50)

This image originated in a found, vintage, B/W photo, a studio portrait of a young man with a cleft palate. His identity was, and still is, unknown to me. I dramatically reworked and hand colored this photo to create something new.
I thought of this pic as a high school portrait from some other reality. The clouds in the background are anything but natural. They reflect some universe that more closely resembles "the Matrix" than our own. We know this, because they have not fully formed ("rezzed") just yet. They remain in an in-between stage, somewhere between existing and not existing. What is "real" in this portrait is up for debate. But what is undeniable is the gaze of the young man who not only has a cleft palate, but a cleft head to match. His one eye stares intently at us, the viewer. Is he asking us to set things right? The emoji pin in hs lapel implies a naive positivity that's at odds with his environment and his intense gaze. Perhaps its from better times and now it simply highlights the absence of such notions.

If you've ever been in love, (and you likely have) then I'm certain that you can relate to this one. This artwork depicts two lovers in a passionate embrace. It's a timeless subject matter and it's been pictorialized by artists such as Gustav Klimt, Rene Magritte, Edvard Munch, and way too many others, to list here. I thought that the emotional pull of a lover is powerful and addictive, like the way a sugary breakfast cereal is to a kid on a Saturday morning. So, I portrayed the lovers, not only enveloped in an environment of sugary cereal, but they themselves have become "Fruit Loops" for each other. The colors of this artwork are saturated and rich. Everything about it screams "passion".

This was another found, vintage, B/W photo which probably originated as an advertising photo for the purpose of selling properties. It was highly staged and well lit. Everything in it, seemed to be meticulously arranged and "in-order".
Long ago I discovered that ancient Romans had a well used phrase, "Momento Mori". It literally means "Remember you must die" - but in context, it often means something more like "YOLO" or "Carpe Diem". Basically "Enjoy your life to the fullest because tomorrow is not promised". And although the woman in this photo is relaxing in a luxurious environment, the words "Momento Mori" are haphazardly strewn in physical form, throughout the room. They seem to be the only thing out of place. That is, until we inspect closer. We can see that she has removed her face mask to show us what lies underneath. This entire image seems to have taken on a cartoon reality since she seems to be quite relaxed and unharmed, despite exposing her naked skull to the world for inspection.

Although I'm a classically trained artist, I've always been interested in naive or folk art. "To Jasper John's, Who Ive never Really Seen" is a reaction to a Jasper Johns show that I attended. You really don't know his work until you stand in front of one, they're amazing. The painting is from a series of watercolors I made that were very dreamlike and stream of consciousness. When I'm creating these, usually the first thing after waking, nothing is too strange, nothing is "off the table". And I'm often surprised by what takes shape.
