This picture is part of an yet-unnamed series. I loved the idea of finding a box of vintage photos from some other reality or universe. When I began this series, I was very interested in surrealism as well as making something purposefully irreverent. This series really just revels in the absurd. Sometimes it's pretty, sometimes it's grotesque. I began this series in oil painting. But it has expanded to digital photography and found images as well.
This was another found, vintage, B/W photo. I think it probably originated as a "wet-plate collodion". I think so, because of the irregularities in it. The large dark area (bottom rt) and the strange "drippy" irregularity (bottom left). I hand colored it, painted on it, and generally altered and imbued it, with new meaning.
Five women are relaxing in the shallow end of a body of water. They all seem very happy, jovial, and are silently ignoring the elephant in the room. I mean of course, the strange rainbow-esque object rising from the water behind them. The painted rainbow isn't a static arch, instead it rises from the water, twists back into itself and finally disappears behind itself. The rainbow is colorfully optimistic, and contrasts starkly with the large swath of darkness in the bottom right of frame. The sky in the distant background is anything but normal. Large, bold, deep -blue bands cross the sky diagonally. They imply distant, heavy and foreboding, rain-storms. In spite of that, the women in the foreground appear confident, relaxed, and unconcerned. Is the rainbow their creation? Is the rainbow offering them shelter from the murky water? Either way, perhaps there's hope in this scene in the face of great darkness.
